This Is the Least-visited Country in Europe and It's Absolutely Gorgeous

There are a seemingly endless number of destinations and attractions to visit in Europe, both for newcomers and frequent visitors. From the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the Prado in Spain to the Swiss Alps, visitors could spend months touring around Europe and never see it all.

Which might explain why the gorgeous micro-nation of San Marino was the least visited country in Europe in 2016, according the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Situated inside north-central Italy, San Marino is known for its stark mountain views and its three medieval fortresses. The three castles overlook spectacular views, and UNESCO named the historic center a world heritage site, in part for the "castelli."

Visitors can take a stroll along nearby beaches (which are technically in Italy) or through the historic town center before enjoying a meal of fresh pastas, roasted meats, and wines sourced from local vineyards.

Just 23.6 square miles in area, San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world. It can be reached by a quick train or car ride from parts of Northern Italy.

Solar Impulse Completes Historic Trip Around the World

Solar Impulse, the solar-powered aircraft on a record-setting mission, has completed a 25,000-mile trip around the world.

On Saturday, Bertrand Piccard—one of two pilots to take turns guiding the plane—took off from Cairo on the final leg of the journey that began in March of last year. Originally planned to take only a few months, Solar Impulse was waylaid in Hawaii for some time after the aircraft was damaged.

The solar-powered aircraft landed in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

Despite the delays—also frequent because of challenges with finding the right weather, especially for trans-ocean crossings—the mission has been completed. More than a sneak peek at the future of air flight, Solar Impulse is instead a statement about the potential of energy that is not reliant on fossil fuels.

Some 16 months after takeoff, here is a look at the many places around the world that Piccard and André Borschberg took the solar plane.

The Famous Faces of London's Gatwick Airport

The mark the 80th anniversary of its first commercial flight, Gatwick Airport in London released a series of historic photos showing some of the many famous faces that have paid it a visit. The snaps show everyone from members of the royal family to American presidents spending time at one of the world's busiest airports.

A few highlights: Both Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana were photographed showing off two distinct time periods in aviation history. And John F. Kennedy’s pic marks a poignant moment as it was taken just six months before his assassination.

More modern photos were thrown into the mix like Pope John Paul II kissing the ground during his first papal visit in 1982 and supermodel Lily Cole posing on the runway in 2010.

Also included is an incredible photograph from the inaugural flight, which took place on June 6, 1936. Passengers paid around $6 for a ticket, which would equate to approximately $234 by today’s standards. Check out the rest of the historic photos ahead.
